Guide to shipping dangerous goods

1. Under no circumstances will DHL Express transport hazardous goods of classes 1, 2.3, 6.2 (apart from UN3373) and class 7.

2. Hazardous goods will be transported depending on

• the type of product used and the service requested
• the DHL network used along with country-specific, local and operational limitations

Please inform yourself about the national and international transport of hazardous substances and objects!

3. Hazardous goods are only accepted for shipment from customers approved for shipping purposes.

4. For domestic shipping of dangerous goods, no additional agreement is required.

5. Shipments of hazardous goods must abide by the relevant international and national requirements for hazardous goods. This applies in particular to:

• correct classification, identification, packaging, marking and labelling
• the provision of the necessary correct documentation in the air waybill (AWB) if required and production of a "Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods"
• all national deviations and those of the airfreight companies

With a few exceptions, a surcharge is levied for shipments of hazardous goods.

The transport of hazardous goods is considered risky if the goods are not correctly declared, packaged, labelled or are incorrectly handled. Not only do "covert hazardous goods" which have not been declared represent a risk to the life and limb of DHL’s processing staff, they may also endanger general safety and the environment.

Goods for everyday needs such as cleaning products, aerosols, cosmetics or medicine containing alcohol and certain electronic equipment are considered hazardous goods.
If you intend to ship these products either privately or for business reasons and are not sure how to declare hazardous goods, please contact the DHL hazardous goods experts via the customer service before shipping.

Manufacturers of the products stated above will provide you with information regarding transport in what are known as safety data sheets. If the products are hazardous products which are not regulated by any rules or standards, note this in the waybill using the words "not restricted as per special provision A".

If you are sure that your shipments do not contain any hazardous goods, add the words "not restricted" to the statement of contents on the waybill.

The shipper bears sole responsibility for classification, identification, packaging, marking, labelling and correct documentation of a shipment of hazardous goods.

The shipper must observe the rules issued by DHL Express regarding products and services, volume limitations and network restrictions.

The shipper undertakes not to bring any "covert hazardous goods" into circulation. Infringements of such requirements are regulatory offences and may result in fines if penalised by the relevant authorities.
